Timika
Irian Jaya is the eastern-most province of Indonesia and is the western
half of the worlds second largest island, New Guinea. The province is the
largest of Indonesia, 420.000 sq.km! The population is around 2 millions.
Irian Jaya is placed just south of equator, and 3/4 of the area is covered
with tropical rain forests. The mountain range Pegunungan Maoke has
several summits above 4.500 m, and Carstensz Pyramid (4.884 m) is the
highest.

Indonesia has a population just above 200 millions, and these speaks 250
different languages. The nation consist of almost 14.000 islands. The
population can be divided into around 300 different ethnical groups,
and this makes Indonesia one of the most complex nation in the world. The
capital,
Jakarta, has a population of around 12 millions, and also has one of the
highest grow rates in the world.

Petter called from their hotel in Jakarta. All the 5 that have arrived
is feeling ok. At the airport they were met by Defi, their local guide
during their stay in Jakarta. They were relieved when they discovered he
spoke excellent English. The temperature is around 30 degrees Celsius and
the humidity is very high. This was a great difference to the 18 degrees
below at the airport in Oslo.
Eirik will arrive Jakarta Monday. Early Tuesday morning they will all
continue to Timika. The next report from Indonesia will probably be on
